Mount Shasta Ranch, 1008 W.A. Barr Road, five minutes from Lake Siskiyou;
(530) 926-3870; www.travelassist.com/reg/cal21s.html. In a beautiful coun-try setting, a B&B with spacious rooms and suites in a circa-1920 ranch-house, cottages, and a carriage house; gigantic common living room and game room, full breakfast. Children are quite welcome in the carriage house.
Strawberry Valley Inn, 1142 South Mount Shasta Boulevard, Mount Shasta
96067; (530) 926-2052. Lovely landscaped grounds and shade trees make this reasonably priced motel a winner; some rooms have two beds, and there are two-room suites. A huge breakfast buffet is served on a sunny patio or by the fireplace.
Edson House, 203 Birch Street; (530) 926-1754. On a secluded knoll with panoramas of the mountain and Castle Crags, a large 1904 farm home.
Some rooms have fireplaces, Jacuzzis, kitchenettes, sitting areas.
Tree House Best Western, 111 Morgan Way, at Highway 5 and Lake Street;
(530) 926—3101. Large, nicely landscaped motel; large heated indoor pool; casual restaurant.
Redding
Jack's Grill, 1743 California Street; (530) 241—9705. In a casual, noisy, hometown atmosphere. Sixteen-ounce steaks, deep-fried prawns, big plates of good old American food; dinner only.
Hilltop Inn, 2300 Hilltop Drive; (800) 221-6100.A very nice motel with spacious rooms, swimming and wading pools, complimentary continental breakfast, and two reasonably priced restaurants.
Lava Creek Lodge, 1 Island Road, 12 miles north of Highway 299, east of
Redding; (530) 336—6288. Small, rustic lodge with cabins in a wooded setting on a lovely piece of the Fall River, adjacent to Ahjumawi Lava
Springs State Park. The lodge will arrange fly-fishing instruction for you and/or rent boats and gear; or bring your own. Hearty American fare in the dining room.
Dunsmuir
Railroad Park Resort, 100 Railroad Park Road; (530) 235-4440. Restaurant and motel in antique railroad cars; pool, spa. Good jumping-off point for exploring and hiking in Castle Crags. Also, RV park, campground, cabins.
